Paterson pointed out that ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. He added that the positive effect on energy efficiency has been far reaching. Information on the ENERGY STAR website, http://www.energystar.gov , states that “ENERGY STAR provides a trustworthy label on over 60 product categories (and thousands of models) for the home and office. These products deliver the same or better performance as comparable models while using less energy and saving money.” Paterson said, “ENERGY STAR was born in 1992 when the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced it as a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” He added, “ Interestingly enough, although it was only 1992, computers and computer monitors were the first products to receive the label. The list of ENERGY STAR designated products has grown throughout the years to include office equipment products, residential heating and cooling equipment, major appliances, lighting, home electronics and more. The label is now even applied to new homes and commercial buildings as well.” ENERGY STAR now boasts partnerships with more than 20,000 private and public sector organizations. The ENERGY STAR website also states that “ENERGY STAR has successfully delivered energy and cost savings across the country, saving businesses, organizations, and consumers about $18 billion in 2010 alone.” In addition to making it easy for consumers to identify energy efficient products, ENERGY STAR helps homeowners improve a home’s energy efficiency through the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program which offers whole-house solutions to high energy bills. Under the program, participating home energy improvement contractors perform comprehensive home energy assessments that include the heating and cooling systems, windows, insulation, flow of air into and out of the house, as well as a safety check of gas appliances. Based on the results of the whole-house assessment, participating contractors offer solutions designed to address high energy bills. Once the home energy improvement project is completed, the contractor assesses the home's performance again to document that specified improvements were properly installed to achieve the promised energy savings. ENERGY STAR points out that “ all participating contractors are subject to quality assurance reviews by the third-party sponsor to ensure that projects meet program standards and homeowners are assured of high-quality work.” According to ENERGY STAR, more than 75,000 families have had their homes improved through the program. Paterson’s company, New Buffalo Impact, is a participating Home Performance with ENERGY STAR contractor.
