Charlotte Demolition Contractor Focuses on Recycling Initiatives for 2011

W.C. Black and Sons, Inc. is Focused on increasing its Green Initiatives during the Demolition, Wrecking, and Removal of Residential, Commercial, and Industrial Demolition Projects.

May 9, 2011 - PRLog -- W.C. Black and Sons, Inc., a leader in providing residential, commercial, and industrial demolition solutions throughout the Carolinas, has chosen to increase recycling and reutilization efforts in all demolition and dismantling operations. The decision to strive to maximize the application of “Green Initiatives” during demolition projects was chosen due to three main reasons; to reduce environmental and economic impacts within communities, cities, and counties, to reduce the amount of waste and debris transported to and buried in landfill sites, and to maximize to the extent possible the re-use of existing materials removed by designated reutilization and recycling entities.

Increased reutilization and recycling efforts began in late November 2010. With the rise in the prices of oil, fuel, lubricants, parts, and increases in the costs associated with materials and the maintenance of equipment, W.C. Black and Sons, Inc. chose to focus on reducing costs associated with all residential, commercial, and industrial demolition projects. This effort was designed to achieve two specific goals; reduce operating costs and maximize all resources available by utilizing effective recycling strategies and personnel management. With inflation on the rise, W.C. Black and Sons, Inc. has taken and continues to take steps to provide residential and commercial clients with safe, effective, and affordable demolition solutions within the Charlotte Metro Area and North and South Carolina.

Recent examples of recycling initiatives on Commercial Demolition Projects include:

1.  Demolition of Sanctuary Building at Mount Moriah Primitive Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC. The sanctuary building comprised approximately 14,085 square feet and was constructed in 1930. Items recycled from this project included steel, wood, concrete, masonry bricks, and more.

2.  Demolition of the Old Charlotte Boxing Academy on 36th Street in the NoDa (North Davidson) arts district in Charlotte, NC. The structure totaled approximately 11,196 feet and was constructed in 1914. Recycled items included steel beams, copper, aluminum, wood beams, concrete, masonry bricks, wood flooring, various metals, and more. Approximate percentage of total project recycled equals 75%.

3.  Demolition and Wrecking of old Union 76 Gas Station and Fuel Canopy at 6501 North Tryon Street in Charlotte, NC. Both structures were demolished and materials recycled from this project included steel beams, aluminum, copper, various metals, wood, concrete, and more. Approximately 80% of debris/material removed from this project was reutilized or recycled.

W.C. Black and Sons, Inc. has performed hundreds of demolition projects for residential and commercial clients throughout our operating history. Recycling and reutilization efforts have always been a critical component included in our process. Future operations will continue to emphasize a larger focus on recycling and re-use of materials removed. How much material removed and designated for re-use or recycling varies for each project and several factors must be considered when selecting items for re-use. Examples of factors which must be considered are; possible contamination of materials, product lifecycle and structural competency, and cost benefit analysis.
