May 6, 2011 - PRLog -- WILLIAMSBURG, VA. (May 5, 2011) – More than 100 people from around the Williamsburg area came together at Lennar Homes’ Colonial Heritage community to recognize and honor the bravery of 44 World War II veterans as part of an Honor Flight Send Off on Saturday, April 30.  Following a brief ceremony inside the Colonial Heritage Clubhouse, a fife and drum corps along with a VFW motorcycle escort joined the veterans as they traveled to the National World War II Memorial in the nation’s capital.

The 44 veterans from the Williamsburg area began the day at 6:30 a.m. at Colonial Heritage before joining a group of 57 veterans from Richmond.  The 101 World War II vets took the emotional journey together to Washington, D.C., on board a chartered bus to the memorial built in their honor.

“The Honor Flight Send Off is a way to bring the entire Colonial Heritage community together to thank and honor these amazing veterans for their service to our country,” said Colonial Heritage Lifestyle Director Karen Ashby.

Saturday’s trip from Colonial Heritage, organized by the Honor Flight Historic Triangle Virginia, was the fourth Honor Flight trip to originate from the Lennar Homes community.  With representatives from the Coast Guard, Langley Air Force Base Color Guard, Military Officers Association of America and other service organizations along with Colonial Heritage residents and members of the Williamsburg community on hand, the veterans were sent off with cheers and applause.

“The Colonial Heritage community, and all of Williamsburg, showed the veterans gathered on Saturday a tremendous amount of respect and honor,” said Dough Harshbarger, a member of the Honor Flight Historic Triangle Virginia planning committee.  “The National World War II Memorial was built in 2004, so the vast majority of World War II veterans have never seen it.  This is a very special trip for each and every one of them.”
