May 5, 2011 - PRLog -- Held in Los Angeles each year, the Maggie Awards honor the best print publications and websites in the Western United States.

The Best Web Column category recognizes general excellence across a series of columns by a single contributor. FireRescue1 beat out a field that included top websites such as AllBusiness and SNEWS.

FireRescue1 received the award for Bread and Butter Basics, written by Charles Bailey, Battalion Chief in MD. With nearly 20 years of active service, Bailey writes his column with the hope that firefighters everywhere will begin to ask hard questions about their operational behaviors and obligations to society using sound science mixed with common sense.

FireRescue1 received two nominations for the 2011 awards, also garnering nods in the Best Web Article/Trade category. Last year, FireRescue1 received three Maggie nominations, which resulted in a win in the Best Web Publication/Trade category.

“We set the bar very high for our expert columnists on FireRescue1, and this award is a testament to the success with which they use their impressive experience to convey critical, lifesaving lessons to our members,” said Alex Ford, CEO for Praetorian Group. “Naturally, the credit for this award goes to Charles Bailey, whose thought-provoking writing style consistently challenges our readers to consider other perspectives on common firefighting issues.”

FireRescue1’s parent company, the Praetorian Group, received eight nominations for the 2011 Maggie Awards across three of its primary online portals: http://www.policeone.com, http://www.firerescue1.com and http://www.ems1.com. The eight nominations ranked the company among one of the most-nominated media companies for this year’s awards, and added to Praetorian’s total of 24 nominations over the past four years.

The Maggie Awards, the Western Publishing Association's most prestigious publishing event, honors editorial, design and promotion excellence in magazine, tabloid, newsletter and online publishing. The Western Publishing Association has represented magazine publishers and companies who interact with magazine publishing industry for over 50 years. The WPA presents more than a thousand Maggie Award nominations each year to publications across the Western United States.
