May 5, 2011 - PRLog -- As Shimer College, Chicago's Great Books college, marks its 158th year, it will welcome Deep Springs College president David Neidorf as the keynote speaker at Shimer's commencement ceremony this Saturday, May 7, 2011.  See http://www.shimer.edu/newsandevents/Graduation-2011.cfm for details of this upcoming event.

President Neidorf served on the Shimer faculty from 1989 to 1990, and has been president of Deep Springs College since 2008.  He has a BA from the New School for Social Research, and master's degrees from St. John's College and the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago.  Between Shimer and Deep Springs, he taught for ten years at St. Mary's College of California.

The ceremony will take place at 2 PM on May 7, in the Atrium building on the IIT campus.  The Atrium is situated at 10 West 35th Street, just west of Shimer College, which is located at 3424 S State.

Shimer and Deep Springs are two of America's smallest colleges, enrolling 128 and 26 students respectively.  Both schools pursue deeply unique approaches to the problems of American higher education.  In addition, both schools have recently been successful in defending their unique traditions against attempted hostile takeovers.  Neidorf's upcoming speech has consequently aroused considerable interest throughout the Shimer College community.
