Follow on Google News | 2011 Swordfest features Sensei Paul Manogue's Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Hyoho Embu - 14 May 2011Sensei Manogue Embu of Yagyu Shin Kage Ryu represents one of the koryu (classical weapons systems of Japan) - Saturday 14 May 2011 at the Virginia Kenshinkai Swordfest in our indoor Capital Area Budokai arena in Alexandria VA (rain or shine).
By: dpInk: DonnaInk Publications Paul Manogue has been studying the martial arts since 1981. He has studied Korean and Japanese karate, Japanese Kendo, western foil and saber fencing, as well as western boxing. In 1988 while studying abroad in Japan he began studying Yoshinkan aikido at the Honbu dojo. Upon returning to Japan in 1991 he entered the Ryu Mei Kan dojo, a member dojo of the Osaka Buikukai and began studying Aikikai aikido. While in Osaka he studied Edo Yagyu Shin Kage Ryu directly under the current head of the ryu and also trained in Tennen Rishin Ryu, Niten Ichi Ryu, Shindo Muso Ryu, Bujinkan, and Tai Chi. He has continued to explore other martial arts as well, including Jun Fan Gung Fu, Kali, Silat, Machado Jujitsu, Muy Thai, and Capoeira. Yagyu Shin Kage Ryu is one of the koryu -- the ancient martial systems of Japan. It is a hyo ho, a strategic system. Although today's practice focuses on the long sword, more advanced practitioners also practice the wakizashi (short sword), tessen (samurai fan) and muto (open-hand disarming techniques). As with other koryu, Yagyu Shin Kage Ryu focuses primarily on preserving and transmitting a martial system hundreds of years old. Unlike present-day Japanese sword arts like iaido, which seeks to perfect the drawing, cutting, and re-sheathing of the sword, and kendo, which is a competition- Join the 2011 Swordfest in Alexandria Virginia (15 South Quaker Lane, Alexandria, VA) on the 13th through the 15th of May. These are "indoor events." Saturday 14 May is FREE - all demonstrations and exhibits take place on Saturday. The rock stars of the Mixed Sword Arts and Edged Weaponry from the East | West will be featured throughout Saturday's demos. Friday 13 May and Sunday 15 May are training sessions and while they are filling up quickly - some seats remain available. Observational seating at reduced fees will be available at the door.
