Stratford Hall Lends Preservation Expertise to Gloucester Volunteers

May 3, 2011 - PRLog -- Adventures in Preservation and The Fairfield Foundation announce the selection of Phil Mark, Director of Preservation at Stratford Hall, to lead hands-on preservation work at the historic Edge Hill Texaco Service Station. Volunteers will travel to Gloucester at the end of May to help complete repair and restoration of both steel and wood frame windows under the direction of Mr. Mark.

Phil Mark has a degree in Building Preservation/Restoration from Belmont Technical College in addition to a degree in Public History from Western Michigan University. He has extensive hands-on restoration experience from work completed at Washington’s Mount Vernon and from his current position at Stratford Hall.

During the week of May 22-28, volunteers will come from around the U.S. to receive training in in-place window restoration techniques from Phil Mark. Under his guidance this stage of the building preservation will be completed. In addition, Dylan Eastman, LEED AP of Courthouse Construction, Inc., and a member of the James River Green Building Council, will lead participants in a discussion of approaches to energy efficiency upgrades and lighting for historic buildings.

Local community members are invited to join the project and are asked to pay a fee of $300 covering materials, lunches, insurance, and instruction. Various packages are available for those who are traveling from out of town and need lodging.  All volunteers are invited to extend their stay in Gloucester through Memorial Day weekend and explore the history of the region with an exclusive behind the scenes tour of Colonial Williamsburg’s Archaeology Research Programs on Saturday, May 28.
