"Taiwan Autos Report Q2 2011" is now available at Fast Market Research

New Transportation research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

PRLog - May 3, 2011 - Despite softening in Taiwan's economic momentum, BMI believes private consumption will remain an important factor supporting growth in 2011, on the back of an improved labour market and consequently stronger wage growth. As such, we expect vehicle sales to grow just over 13% y-o-y, to 285,700 units, in 2011. However, we warn that correction in property prices will begin to weigh on consumer sentiment, bringing vehicle down to close to an average 8% after 2011. The market will therefore end 2015 with sales reaching 394,600 units.

Meanwhile, we see strong downside risks to its forecast for Taiwan's vehicle exports for 2011 after a fourfold increase in vehicle exports in 2010. Export growth in 2010 was mostly led by Japanese brands looking to offset the strong yen by raising output and exports elsewhere. As a best scenario we see exports growing only marginally in 2011, if not being completely collapsed due to base effects from 2010 levels.

Nevertheless, we expect vehicle production to remain firmly remain on a positive growth trajectory. Although production in 2011 is likely to be less impressive than the 34% y-o-y growth, to just under 303,500 units, seen in 2010, we expect carmakers to maintain an average production growth of nearly 8% y-o-y between 2012 and 2015.

Meanwhile, Yulon revealed it hopes to enter the domestic electric vehicle (EV) market. As part of its partnership with Japanese automaker Nissan Motor, the company hopes to work with the Taichung City Government to increase the number of EVs on Taiwan's roads. Japanese carmaker Honda Motor's local branch in Taiwan has launched the Insight Hybrid in a bid to compete with Japanese automaker Toyota Motor.

Toyota continues to dominate the market with a share of 40.7% in 2010. Its position is bolstered by declines over the year for other manufacturers and with sales outperforming the overall market.
