Playing Golf in Houston Just Got a Lot Funnier

Course owner Ronny Cuenod Jr. recently sought to lighten things up a bit by having a golf joke contest, with the prizes being either green fees for four, or a set of quality irons. In May the irons are Ping K15s.

May 2, 2011 - PRLog -- Playing golf at River Ridge Golf Club in Sealy Texas is serious business. The 27-hole Jay Riviere spread on the Brazos River, patterned after Old World courses such as Winged Foot and Turnberry, presents a challenge worthy of many important Texas golf tournaments such as the Dave Marr Cup, and the Southern Texas PGA Senior Series.

People looking for a place to play golf in Houston often hop on I-10 West to go "play the river," recently named the readers' "Favorite Golf Course in the West" in the 2011 Houston Chronicle Golf Guide.

Golfers might be interested to know that the course, while challenging, can allow golfers to score quite low as long as they stay out of the creeks, pecan trees, and sand traps such as The Devil's Eyes.

Case in point, Cinco Ranch junior Abby Newton set the competition record at River Ridge this year by shooting a five under par 64-73 in this year's District 19-5A Championships. That's the record for any gender, and she beat it by 4 strokes. Newton went on to win regionals this year as well.

Course owner Ronny Cuenod Jr. recently sought to lighten things up a bit by having a golf joke contest, with the prizes being either green fees for four, or a set of quality irons. In May the irons are Ping K15s.

Golfers can also text the word GOLFING to 69302 to join their new mobile text list and get additional offers and coupons.

Although the contest has been a smashing success, contestants no longer are required to even enter a joke. Perhaps management had finally heard enough about Moses' hole in one, but according to PGA Pro Trey Birchum it has been a funny way to hear back from fans of the course.

Houstonians have probably heard some of the radio or TV ads as well featuring a couple of old duffers who can't help cracking another joke, even if they can't sink a putt.

But River Ridge provides a unique mixture of Old World golf and Texas lifestyle, serving BBQ for patrons to enjoy on the 1,500 square-foot veranda with its view of all three nines. People looking to play golf in Houston might look slightly westward to Sealy, and bring a laptop if WiFi matters, keeping them connected when they just can't leave work behind.
