Martha Stewart Inspired Mom Wins $1000 from Porch Step’s

Stay at Home Mom Shares Passion for Gardening in Her Community

May 2, 2011 - PRLog -- Knoxville, TN – May 2, 2011 –Porch Step, a lifestyle media company has announced Carrie Cabral, Potosi, Missouri as the winner of its 5 Simple Things Spring Challenge.

On March 21, 2011, Porch Step asked Americans, “How could $1000 help you do something that will transform a life?” Cabral, whose story, “Teach a Man to Fish and You Feed Him for a Lifetime” was among numerous entries from throughout the U. S., sharing personal stories on how winning the Five Simple Things Challenge could bring about significant change in the lives of others.

In her winning Challenge submission, Cabral shares her passion for gardening.  She describes how self-sufficiency can not only save you money but help you preserve your future.  Having grown up on a farm, Cabral credits her knowledge of sustainability to her own childhood examples as well as a number of similarly minded gardening and agriculture experts in her community.  From gardening to composting to raising chickens, Cabral’s passions are contagious and cost effective.

Cabral plans to host a local seminar to encourage others to garden providing resources such as seed packets, tips on container gardening, canning fruits and vegetables, composting, and raising chickens for egg production.  She has invited several local experts to participate in the discussions hoping to create a fun family environment.

“It inspires me to hear how people want to do something to positively impact the life of another,” said John Tolsma, Porch Step CEO. “What I found more remarkable is how Carrie’s passion can truly affect her community especially those in most need.”

From March 21 until April 18, 2011, visitors to www.5SimpleThingsChallenge.com cast their vote for the story they felt was most compelling. Porch Step will work with Cabral to document her project. A follow up to her story will be available on www.porchstep.com.

“My hope is that those who submitted their stories and those who voted for their favorite stories will use this challenge to continue to reach out to help make a positive impact in the lives of others.” said Tolsma.

The Five Simple Things Challenge was born out of Tolsma’s recently published book, 5 Simple Things, a journal and daily guidebook. For more information, visit www.porchstep.com.
