New Market Research Report: Argentina Commercial Banking Report Q2 2011

New Financial Services market report from Business Monitor International: "Argentina Commercial Banking Report Q2 2011"

May 2, 2011 - PRLog -- As with much of the rest of the Argentine economy, the banking sector remains characterised by untapped  potential, with the country's recent history of macroeconomic instability and unorthodox economic  policymaking continuing to undermine confidence in the industry. Despite surging growth in 2010, when  Q3 real GDP growth came in at an impressive 8.6% year-on-year (y-o-y), and a solid growth outlook for  2011, the industry's prospects over the medium term are stunted by a combination of rampant inflation,  government interference and persistent consumer wariness towards an industry still tainted by memories  of the financial collapse in 2001. As such, while we maintain our long-held view that the potential for  commercial banking growth is massive, for the time being the sector will continue to lag behind its  regional peers.      Lagging Behind Its Rivals  Argentina's banking sector woes are exemplified by a comparison with Brazil, its neighbour and the only  economy in South America that is larger. At first glance, the trajectory of client loan growth, which is a  crucial indicator of banking sector expansion, would appear similar, with loan growth in both countries  surging towards 25% y-o-y level in September 2010 as the industry rebounded from the crisis of 2009 and  domestic demand increased at record levels.    However, factor in the impact of inflation and the picture becomes very different, with Argentine banks  having little incentive to lend at anything below commercially prohibitive interest rates (see our online  service, September 22 2010, 'Inflation Curbs Growth Potential'). Although inflation in Brazil has been  rising steadily since early 2010, generally prudent macroeconomic management implies that the days of  hyperinflation have been consigned to history, keeping real loan growth at the 20% y-o-y level in  September 2010. But in Argentina, unofficial inflation estimates of 28.9% y-o-y in November, compared  with the much more conservative 11.0% y-o-y figure published by the official statistics agency INDEC,  mean that real credit growth is still in negative territory. With lower credit growth already translating into  stagnant net interest income growth, banks will continue to struggle to prop up their profits over the  medium term.
