Follow on Google News | Geeks On Site on Techies’ Terminology IISecond part of our article on technology and techies’ terminology that could make you lose track of a conversation, or you’re just not completely sure what that word or phrase means...
By: Martina R. iPad – a line of tablet computers (check out our previous article on this theme) with its primary audio-visual purpose which includes books, newspapers, music, movies, games, and web content. The operating system is the same as in iPod Touch and iPhone (check out our previous article) and is capable of running its own applications. However, with exception of websites, this little device can only run Apple approved programs bought in online stores, unless jailbroken, which brings us to the next term. iOS Jailbreaking – a process of unlocking all features of devices using Apple’s iOS. Once unlocked, the device is not limited just to Apple applications, but able to download any other application extension or theme not available in the Apple online store. Jailbreaking is pretty easy to do, just by downloading a program that will enable you to unlock the operating system. So far jailbreaking is not illegal in the US, although it voids Apple’s device warranty. Netbook – new generation of small, lightweight and cheaper version of laptop computers. Netbooks first appeared in the market in 2007 as an alternative to laptop computers. In comparison to their ‘big brothers’, Netbooks have smaller screens and keyboards, reduced computing power, and they omitted some features (as the optical drive). They usually weight 2-3 pounds (1kg) and are often significantly less expensive than other laptops. Kindle – a new way to read books. This is a brand of e-readers that people are still pretty divided about. If you are a passionate reader you might not be totally in favor of this gadget since you will read books from a screen, no pages turning, no pages sound, and no pages feel. However, you can have more than one ‘book’ in one place without limping under the weight of Tolkien’s trilogy. For some people this seems an ideal solution, and for some – a non-comparable replacement. Sony PSP2 – another one of Sony’s toys that is about to come at the end of this or beginning of next year. Also known by its code name NGP or ‘Next Generation Portable’, PSP2 is the latest generation of Play Station-like, gaming devices. Next year PSP2 or NGP will be one of the leading ‘must have’ gadgets, therefore, get ready to hear a lot about it once it gets out ‘in the open’. At the end of the second part of our Techies’ Terminology article, we hope we helped you overcome some doubts you might have. Due to the high interest of our readers in this subject, this will not be the last article on technical terminology.
