Treasure Island Sailing Center to Celebrate Opening Day on the Bay

PRLog (Press Release) - Apr. 27, 2011 - Treasure Island, CA - Treasure Island Sailing Center (TISC) is hosting its Opening Day on the Bay celebration on Saturday, April 30, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in honor of Northern California’s season opener for sailing.  This annual event is free to the public and includes boat rides, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, concessions, children’s crafts and games, entertainment, and more for the entire family.  Information about TISC’s new $25 Friends and Family Weekend Sailing and Monday Women’s Clinic will also be introduced.

“Opening Day is our largest annual community event to kick off the sailing season, with over 600 people in attendance,” said Lacey Todd, operations manager at TISC. “Our goal for Opening Day is to provide a fun, free, and active celebration for families to enjoy. We hope to promote community sailing and encourage people to take advantage of our affordable sailing classes and scholarship program.”

Adding to the fun, visitors who take a photo and check-in at the event on Facebook will be entered for a chance to win a free sailing class. Visitors without a Facebook account can enter to win at the TISC information booth. People who sign up for a sailing or water sports class during the event will receive 10 percent off, offer valid only on Opening Day.

All visitors will be entered to win door prizes, including cheese and a gift basket from Point Reyes Station artisan cheese makers Cowgirl Creamery (http://www.cowgirlcreamery.com/), and a gift certificate for free wine tasting valued at $300 (up to 30 attendees) from Treasure Island Wines (http://www.tiwines.net/), the original Treasure Island winery. Certificate includes two hours with winemaker Jim Mirowksi, a winery tour, handcrafted wine samplings, crystal logo glasses, and an artisan bread and cheese tasting.

Treasure Island Sailing Center will also be handing out coupons from Treasure Island Wines for complimentary artisan wine and cheese tastings to event visitors over the age of 21.  Coupons will only be valid after sailing, on the day of Opening Day, April 30, and only during winery business hours from 12 to 4 p.m.

Bay Area face painting artist Rose Delfino, owner of At The Top Creations (http://www.atthetopcreations.com/), and Mr. SHAP Balloon Twister-Magician (aka Robert Shapiro) (http://www.mrshap.com/), will be making appearances at Opening Day to entertain the children. Photography during the event will be provided by Brittany Erin Photography (http://www.brittanyerinphotography.com/). Scott Keck, a long-time supporter of TISC and member of OCSC Sailing, will be on hand as DJ to entertain the crowds.

A barbecue lunch will be available for $3 per person, $10 for families of four, with scholarships available for those in need.

Throughout the year, TISC will host a number of events and programs (http://www.tisailing.org/calendar-and-events/event-details): National Safe Boating Week, May 21; BIG Team Regatta, September 30 - TISC’s largest fundraising event of the year; and Lights On Afterschool, October 20.  Youth Summer Camp begins in June. New, one-day $25 classes beginning in May include: Monday Women’s Clinic, Wednesday Night Keelboat Race Clinic, Saturday Bay Sail, Sunday Friends and Family J24 Sail, and Paddleboarding/Kayaking.

Over the last 11 years, TISC has engaged over 9,000 youth and adults in the joy of sailing! In 2010 alone, TISC is proud to have provided over 9,373 hours of instruction to 990 participants, with a 30 percent return rate to ensure that children are connecting to the sport of sailing and participating in our positive, sailing community. Staying true to our mission, TISC provided 62 percent of its youth participants with scholarships to attend our programs.

TISC offers unlimited scholarships to those who fit the financial criteria. Full scholarships are available for families with a household income of $30,000 or less, or for families on a government assistance program. Partial Scholarships (50 percent off the class price) are available for families with a household income of less than $65,000.
