Farrell & Associates shines a light on solar power initiatives in North Portland

Mark Farrell knows that it’s time for Portland to get serious about alternative fuel and community power. That’s why he had a 9.8 kilowatt solar array installed on the roof of his North Portland office that feeds power back to the public grid. The solar roof also provides energy for an electric car-charging station, only one of two in the neighborhood, which is free to the public.

“The future is alternative fuels and green technologies, and that’s something our customers care about,” says Farrell. In addition to offering the free charger, Farrell also urges customers to go solar by supporting projects such as Solarize North Portland, a volunteer-led organization that helps area residents to purchase solar panels in bulk for their homes.

Farrell’s free charger, located at 4772 N. Lombard Street, was the first of its kind in North Portland. The 40-panel roof array generates about 10,000 kilowatts per year - enough to run an average city home for the same length of time. On weekends and when the office is not in use any power generated returns to the grid. In all of Portland there are just 99 commercial buildings with similar installations, according to the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability.

Fuel independence, sustainable living, and alternative fuels are hot topics in eco-conscious Portland. PGE is partnering with Nissan to bring 1000 all-electric LEAF cars to the area, and several local companies are now beginning to experiment with solar arrays and car chargers to prepare for the future demand.
