PRLog (Press Release) - Apr. 26, 2011 - BIG BROTHERS, BIG SISTERS GET BIG BOOST FROM LOCAL CHILDREN’S FASHION BOUTIQUE

AVON-  It’s a family-owned store focused on dressing kids in stylish clothes.  Now, My New Wardrobe is helping an entirely different group of children.

Owners Susan Macko and Hillary Wallace opened the store at Riverdale Farms, 136 Simsbury Road in Avon in 2006.  Since then, their goal has been to offer kids of all sizes and shapes fun, stylish, and age -appropriate clothing that helps them fit in with their peers.  Now the store is hosting a special event to raise money for Nutmeg Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

“I was a Big Sister years ago, and saw the incredible impact the program had on kids,” said Macko.  “Non-profits struggled for funding back then – even when the economy was strong.  In these tough times, these organizations are really struggling to come up with funding to make a difference in kids’ lives.  We saw an opportunity to help.”

From May 21 – May 28, My New Wardrobe is hosting a special “Designers in the Attic” buy one, get one free sale.  A portion of the proceeds will go to benefit Big Brothers, Big Sisters. Designers include Flowers by Zoe, Joules, LA Made, Alessia,
KC Parker, Ragdoll & Rockets, Jeanine Johnsen and Mignone.

During Macko’s six years as a Big Sister, she experienced the power and joy of helping children fit in.  It helped shaped the very concept of the store – which is one of the reasons she’s so passionate about helping the organization.

“Our clothes offer styles for most everyone.  We don’t have images of ‘perfect’ or scantily-clad models around the store.  It’s a comfortable environment for kids to gain confidence by finding clothing that makes them feel good about themselves.”

Wallace, a mom-to-be, said it’s a great way for parents to get great deals and stock up on designer clothes while helping a wonderful cause – without having to deal with big box-stores.

“In this economy, there are so many local stores closing their doors – and options for parents looking for a fashion boutique are becoming extremely limited.  We’re just a couple of moms catering to the needs of other moms,” said Wallace.  “We want to see these kids leave with smiles, knowing that they will fit in and look great. And, it helps a great cause….it’s a win for everybody.”
