April 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Encino, CA  -- Consumers who are facing audits or are behind in paying back taxes or even filing late returns may want to take their medicine and reach out to the IRS, either in person or on the telephone. Tax resolution experts, however, caution that negotiating with the government agency without expert representation can be tricky at best and can often make a bad situation much worse.

“I often ask consumers who want to do this, would you also go to court without a defense lawyer?” said Michael Rozbruch, founder and CEO of Tax Resolution Services, Co.® (TRS), an Inc 5000 company. “It may be surprising for a taxpayer to learn that there are legitimate reasons for consumers to proceed with caution when dealing directly with the IRS. While the IRS may be doing its best to provide options for struggling taxpayers, they do not have your best interests at heart.”

The Wall Street Journal’s online MarketWatch site addressed this issue recently, in an article titled “7 ways to persuade the IRS you are right: The IRS wants to meet with you? Proceed with caution.” The article lists “rules” to remember when dealing with the IRS, including, “don’t ignore the IRS” when it contacts you but also “stop talking” when a simple “yes” or “no” answer is called for. Rule no. 7? “Don’t go it alone. Consider hiring a pro—a tax lawyer, certified public accountant, or enrolled agent.”

Rozbruch adds that taxpayers who owe the IRS more than $25,000 in back taxes, penalties, and interest should be prepared to fully disclose all their financial information to the IRS - or get expert tax help from a tax attorney or Certified Tax Resolution Specialist to work with the IRS on their behalf.

“The federal tax code is notoriously complicated, so it’s important for consumers to understand that what they don’t know about tax resolution could really hurt them,” he said. “Whether it's bringing taxpayers into IRS compliance or helping them understand their tax issues so they can work directly with the IRS - a reputable tax resolution firm will hold the IRS accountable to following their own laws, rules and regulations during the tax resolution process, while guiding taxpayers to tax relief options that best fit their individual circumstances not the IRS’s.”
