The seminar, presented by the Franklin Round Table, provided Continuing Legal Education credit for criminal defense attorneys.
“Since the Padilla ruling, criminal defense attorneys are required to advise non-citizen clients that they can face immigration consequences, including deportation, because of a criminal conviction,”
Garcia reviewed the consequences of various types of convictions, and strategies to minimize the consequences to the defendant. Niner focused on strategies to keep criminal defense attorneys in compliance of Padilla and avoid facing allegations of ineffective assistance of counsel. That includes informing clients that if they are not citizens of the United States, any conviction potentially could have serious immigration consequences and that they should consult an immigration specialist if they want advice on that subject.
The Round Table method allows for discussion, enabling everyone to learn from the real life applications of others and often generating lively debate. Franklin Round Table can be reached at (615) 790-4446. Email: Venus@FranklinRoundTable.com.
