Essential Theatre Festival Receives Over Fifty New Play Submissions

April 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Peter Hardy, Artistic Director of Essential Theatre reports that the submission period for scripts for our 2012 playwriting award has closed. For a number of years Essential Theatre has averaged about 30 entries a year in its Georgia New Play Competition. For the past couple of years that number has risen to about 50, though a good number of the submissions were short plays, that would only have dim possibilities for winning the award. In 2010 and 2011, the theatre received the exact number of submissions — 53, and most of them have been full-length plays, amounting to more true possibilities for a full production. “We are pleased that The Essential Theatre is getting more submissions from outside the immediate area of Atlanta. This is a good indication that the theatre is better serving the whole of Georgia,” he noted.  

Essential Theatre's mission is to challenge Georgia audiences and to support Georgia artists by encouraging the creation of new dramatic literature and giving local actors, directors and designers the chance to work on exciting new plays that have not yet been produced in this area - all World Premieres and Regional Premieres. We invite the participation of audiences in developing the work of these playwrights through workshops, staged readings and full productions.

Each year, we present the ESSENTIAL THEATRE PLAY FESTIVAL, a repertory of new plays running in rotation. From the first year of the Festival we have been committed to producing at least one new play a year by a Georgia playwright, and in 2001 we began the annual Essential Theatre Playwriting Award, the only such competition exclusively dedicated to Georgia playwrights.
