Visit Rhode Island Goes Mobile

April 25, 2011 - PRLog -- This afternoon the Rhode Island Division of Tourism officially launches their mobile specific website on www.visitrhodeisland.com. The website will automatically detect if you are on a mobile browser.  The site features a menu where you can select options for places to eat and stay, things to see and do, and options to plan your trip to Rhode Island.  Another great feature that was implemented for this site is geolocation. Geolocation allows you to find businesses, such as restaurants, hotels, and gas stations, close to your current location.

The idea to create a mobile specific site was established based on trends noticed from Google Analytics reports, showing more and more users accessing the site from iPads’ and mobile browsers.  “The nature of the tourism industry is demanding quicker and easier access to information” says Ernie Gaines, Brave River President.

The challenge to creating an effective mobile site is to make it fast, provide light images, and make the page sizes minimal.  You want the site to involve as few clicks as possible, and avoid any cumbersome features.  As mobile internet is evolving so quickly Brave River has implemented use of the WURFL (Wireless Universal Resources File) database to keep up to date on what browsers are mobile.
