Is that really true? The e-mail never reveals what that "better" was... Was it more experience or more education. The simple answer would be NEITHER!!!
Unfortunately, the truth is when you have over a hundred stacks of resumes in front of you it's not humanly possible to determine whose "better" than who...
But a lot of times we go with our humanly gut instinct which is based on "looks". Think about it... From the food we buy at the grocery store to the car we drive off the lot are based on
positive attributes. We would not purchase rotten fruit at the market, nor would we purchase a rust filled car. We link looks to a much bigger picture. If a piece of fruit looks rotten we know
that it will affect the taste, texture and overall quality of the fruit. If we look at a rust filled car we associated that look to its reliabilty, dependability, and overall longevity.
This simple concept is used in the hiring process as well. If your resume can't hold up to the "30 second Rule" it's tossed. If an employer can't look at you resume and in a half a minute or LESS see how your talents and abilities can be an asset to their establishment, straight to the shredder it goes.
So back to the first question.... “We have decided to go with another candidate that fits our needs better"....Is this statement TRUE? Is there really a better candidate?
No. But the candidate did have a BETTER resume that got them the interview..... Their actual skills and competencies will be determined from there....
