The idea for the book began when the author, James Hilgendorf, helped to put together a panel discussion on the subject of life and death from a Buddhist perspective in Los Angeles several years ago. The response was overwhelming;
"Many people are searching for a deepening of meaning to their lives", the author says. "Many of them are vaguely familiar with Buddhism, but their understanding of Buddhism is really a very surface one. After attending this panel discussion, I wanted to put together a book that would elucidate some of the basic concepts and ideas of Buddhism, and which would also show how Buddhist ideas relate to our daily life.
"The most basic problem is the issue of life and death, which affects everyone sooner or later; and which is the problem that is, in the final analysis, the one that affects our entire outlook and view on life.
