Follow on Google News | Car Insurance Rates Promotes Young Driver SafetyCar Insurance Rates has launched a new collection of articles on its site that will highlight issues concerning teenage driver safety.
By: Nathan Ackerman The impetus for the articles comes from a newly published study conducted by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and State Farm Insurance and released in the Accident Analysis and Prevention journal. The study reviewed 800 fatal teen auto accidents and identified commonalities. Overall, teen drivers were four times more likely to have a fatal collision than adult drivers. “We found the new State Farm study quite alarming because all three of the top causes of fatal accidents involving teens are preventable. We wanted to do our part in keeping teen drivers safe, and disseminating the information in the State Farm study is one important way we can help,” said Nathan Ackerman, spokesman for Car Insurance Rates. According to the study, 21 percent of the fatal collisions resulted from the teen driver’s inadequate scanning of the road. Also causing 21 percent of fatal accidents involving teens was speeding, which prevented teens from being able to respond appropriately and quickly enough to road hazards. The third-highest contributing cause to teen vehicular fatalities was driver distractions, such as cell phones, sound systems, and so on. “The message of the study is clear—if we can get teen drivers to be aware, slow down, and concentrate only on the road, we could save thousands of lives every year. CIRS is strongly committed to keeping teen drivers safe, which is why we hope this new series of articles will have a real impact,” said Ackerman.
