April 22, 2011 - PRLog -- FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW, MOTHER BETHEL AME CHURCH IS HOSTING AN UNUSAL Good Friday service that is not only spiritually uplifting but also thought provoking. This year, on Friday April 22, 2011 at 7pm, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill (www.marclamonthill.com) , professor, author, television personality, and public speaker, will give a special lecture “Overcoming Death: The Black Church & Social Struggle” at Mother Bethel (www.motherbethel.org)  located at 419 South 6th Street in Philadelphia.   Good Friday is normally a solemn occasion when Christians recall the last words of Jesus Christ before he was crucified. Rev. Dr. Mark Kelly Tyler, Mother Bethel’s 52nd Pastor, also sees Good Friday as an opportunity for Christians to take a closer look at themselves and, specifically, a time for introspection for “the black church.”   “The Church community must remain open to hear from the intellectual community and vice-versa,” says Pastor Tyler, who holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership.  “We push one another in important ways. That’s why we are excited about hearing a challenging and prophetic message from Dr. Hill, one of the brightest intellectual lights on the horizon.”  This is not the first time Mother Bethel has hosted a scholar on Good Friday. Last year Dr. Eddie Glaude from Princeton University engaged members and visitors in a lively discussion entitled “Is the Black Church Dead; Can It Live Again?” Mother Bethel hopes to continue this series of black intellectual thinkers on special occasions.
