April 22, 2011 - PRLog -- Guangzhou China April 22, 2011 - About 90% of Chinese erythritol output is for export mainly to the EU and the US in 2010. It is predicted that this trend is likely to continue in the future 3 to 5 years due to increasing demand from oversea market and small domestic demand.

With total output of 4,607 tonnes in 2010, China has become one of the world's largest erythritol producers. Erythritol is gradually substituting xylitol to be a sweetener used in high-end food, children food, health food and sugar-free beverage in developed countries with its many distinct functions and advantages compared with xylitol. Erythritol is almost non-caloric without causing tooth decay and has no effect on blood sugar and can be absorbed by human body. Therefore, many oversea purchasers prefer to buy erythritol rather than xylitol.

Meanwhile, domestic demand for erythritol will still be small while xylitol will remain a major low-energy sweetener in China in the future 3 to 5 years. Firstly, erythritol price is so high that many domestic food and beverage producers prefer the low-price xylitol to erythritol though domestic xylitol ex-factory price in April 2011 increases by 26.4% over May 2010 and will maintain this uptrend. Secondly, erythritol is a kind of emerging sweetener with quite low reputation in China, while xylitol has been well-known for dozens of years in China because of one of its end product–xylitol chewing gum. Xylitol chewing gum is able to efficiently prevent tooth decay and is very popular with young people in China.

At present, many domestic erythritol producers are endeavoring to raise reputation of the product in the aim of promoting it in domestic market. For example, Shandong Futaste Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., one of leading xylitol and erythritol producers, is actively recommending erythritol to clients rather than xylitol currently. In addition, Shandong Baolingbao Biotechnology Co., Ltd., another leading erythritol producer in China, is researching and developing new erythritol application areas such as chocolate and chewing gum, and expects to launch an end product of erythritol in the near future similar to that of xylitol chewing gum.

Erythritol will remain export-oriented in future 3 to 5 years. Whether it will be another case after 3 or 5 years, let’s just wait and see.
