Singapore Grants Patent for babyLance Infant Heel Incision Device

April 21, 2011 - PRLog -- SINGAPORE and ATLANTA – MediPurpose, a master distributor and manufacturer of medical products, today announced an addition to its expanding portfolio of medical device patents.

MediPurpose recently received approval of its application for patent protection of its babyLance infant heel incision device from the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore.

The IPOS issued MediPurpose a Certificate of Grant of Patent number 167188.
               
The infant heel incision device's patent approval is currently pending in several other countries.

Launched last July, babyLance is a single-use heel incision device utilized to obtain a blood sample from the heels of newborn (babyLance BLN) and preemie (babyLance BLP) infants.

The IPOS patent protects the unique design of the babyLance(tm) infant heel incision device, which earned it a U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance with sharps prevention indications-the first infant heel stick to earn such a distinction. These sharps prevention indications include:

   * A locking mechanism to prevent accidental activation of the device.

   * A housing that conceals the blade before and after the device is used.

   * An internal spring that automatically retracts the blade after use.

   * A stop feature that disables the device after a single use.
