April 21, 2011 - PRLog -- Pet owners are typically well-informed when it comes to the physical needs of being a “pet parent,” yet whether or not your pet will become lonely is not one of them. In her newly released children’s book, The Lonely Parrot, children’s author and “pet Momma,” Lisa Kelley tells the true-life story of JoJo, a parrot who did indeed become very lonely.

JoJo, a Moustached Parakeet (the formal name for this type of parrot), was just a young bird when he was adopted from a pet store and taken home to be a pal to young Sammy. In the beginning, JoJo was extremely happy as together he and Sammy studied, ate popcorn, took showers, and played. JoJo felt so loved and happy that he danced, whistled, and twirled around his perch. But Sammy grew up, as children do, and JoJo was left alone for days at a time in his cage. He was still well cared for with good food and a nice home, but he no longer had a friend to play with him, and JoJo became very lonely.

In this book that is targeted to children from five to nine years of age, Kelley takes us through the changes that JoJo goes through as he deals with his loneliness and missing his best friend. He goes from being a happy parrot to a rather naughty one in his desperation for attention.

The story is about the love between people and their pets along with insight into the joy of owning a parrot (or any pet) and the responsibilities that go with it. Kelley is the real JoJo’s new momma and wrote the story with the intention of entertaining young children with JoJo’s story, as well as teaching them – and their parents – some important lessons about parrot ownership.

Illustrator Charles Akins of Columbia, South Carolina, created beautiful illustrations that bring Kelley’s words to life, and together they have also created a website where children and adults alike can meet JoJo, hear him talk, and see him play with his toys: www.thelonelyparrot.net.

The book was published by Boutique of Quality Books Publishing Company and is available through their website www.boutiqueofqualitybooks.com as well as through Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and booksellers around the country.
