April 21, 2011 - PRLog -- Serate Musicali  announces its next concert event, “A Time to Weep:  Music for Good Friday”,  in conjunction with the Calvary Presents Concert series, April 22, 2011, at 7:30 pm, in the historic sanctuary of the  Calvary Baptist Church, 755 8th St. NW, Washington, DC  20001, the fifth in our annual presentations of rare and seldom-performed sacred works.

This year’s concert features music by Max Reger and Johannes Bach on the theme of the well known hymn “O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden (O Sacred Head Now Wounded)”, that most famous tune written by Hans Leo Hassler, but known to us from Bach’s setting included in his Matthaus-passion.

The program also includes Bach’s choral cantata, BWV 161, “Komm, du susse Todesstunde" (Come, Sweet Death) (BWV 161), itself both a musical and textual echo of the famous hymn created by Hassler and restated by Bach. Returning to the series is soprano Elaine Dalbo, contralto Susan Sevier and the Chalice Chamber Ensemble under the baton of Dr. Cheryl Branham. Making his series debut is tenor Jason Rylander, hailed by the Washington Post for his "strong, clear tenor" and for performances that "coupled sonorous warmth and emotional depth",  is a well-known interpreter of Bach’s music, appearing frequently with the Washington Bach Consort, the Bach Sinfonia, as well as other presenters of this music.

Susan Sevier is equally at home in oratorio, opera, and theatrical musicals, and received critical acclaim for her recent performances of Haydn’s Stabat Mater,  “Erda” in Wagner’s Das Rheingold with the Washington National Wagner Society and “The Witch” in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel with the Maryland Opera Society.

Elaine Dalbo made her operatic debut with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Locally she has sung with the Alexandria Symphony, The Capital City Symphony, at the Kennedy Center, and with Opera Theater of Northern Virginia, Opera Bel Canto and appeared as “Meg” in Summer Opera’s Little Women.

Dr. Branham is the music director at Calvary Baptist, former Asst. Conductor of the Washington Chorus under Donald Schaeffer, and a frequent conductor on series such as the St. Luke’s Concert Series in McLean.

The performance is a benefit for Shalom Scholarship, a scholarship designed to help students in El Salvador, where public education ends at the 8th grade, to finish high school and go to college. “
