New Defense market report from Business Monitor International: "Australia Defence & Security Report Q2 2011"

April 21, 2011 - PRLog -- Australia saw real GDP growth slow in 2010, expanding by just 0.2% quarter-on-quarter (seasonally adjusted) in Q310. Our expectation originally was that 2011 would see the Australian economy expand by only 1.6%. However, in the final quarter of 2010 and into early 2011, a number of pieces of positive news have come through, including an increase in employment numbers. Adding this to an ongoing strength in the commodity bull market, BMI is now looking for 2.4% overall real GDP growth for the country in 2011, up from the expected 1.6% previously.

The country has close links with both the US and with China and as both economies are also doing well in early 2011, Australia should benefit too. It is particularly linked economical with China, as it is now Australia's largest export destination. However, the Chinese attitude towards its own military power means that Australia must tread very carefully while building on the two countries' economic alliance. Perhaps in order to protect itself a little against any threats from China, Australia signed a security pact with Japan.

The increase in regional military cooperation does come at several costs. China could well be put out at the arrangement with Japan, especially as Australia as such strong historical ties with the US. The three countries together could be seen as somewhat threatening to a sensitive Beijing. Meanwhile, Australia itself is continuing to increase and improve its military capabilities. The latest addition to the arsenal will be 12 new submarines, part of a US$44bn plan of upgrades.
