Chamber music concert in Tempe: ‘Seventh Roadrunner’ trio May 1

April 20, 2011 - PRLog -- Clarinet, viola and piano trio ‘Seventh Roadrunner’ performs works of Max Bruch, Jean Françaix, Johannes Brahms, Rebecca Clarke and Victor Babin Sunday May 1, 2011 at 4:30 PM at Church of the Epiphany, 2222 S. Price Road, Tempe, three blocks south of the Broadway/Price Rd intersection. Admission is free with donations accepted; suggested donation is $10 for adults and $5 for students. A reception follows the concert.

Seventh Roadrunner members Brian Viliunas, clarinet; Katherine Shields, viola and
Andrew O’Brien, piano will be playing Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Viola, and Piano, Op. 83 by Max Bruch; Prelude, Allegro and Pastorale for viola and clarinet (1941) by Rebecca Clarke;
Sonata in F minor Op. 120, no. 1 by Johannes Brahms; and Hillandale Waltzes (1947) by Victor Babin. Also on the program are two works of French neo-classical composer Jean Françaix- Trio, for clarinet, viola, and piano and Tema con Variazioni  for clarinet and piano (1974).

Brian Viliunas, clarinet, is the founder and director of the Sustainable Symphony. Viliunas performs regularly as the principal clarinet both with the Phoenix Metropolitan Opera and the Arizona Opera. A native of Greendale, Wisconsin, he is currently working on the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Arizona State University where he is a Teaching Assistant and a Javits Fellow. Brian has performed in eleven states and Washington, D.C., fourteen countries and three continents.

Katherine Shields, viola, is a member of the Arizona Opera Orchestra and adjunct faculty at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. She is Director of the Chaparral MusicFest Chamber Music Workshop (Prescott, AZ) and faculty for the Silverton (CO) Fall Colors Chamber Music Weekend. A native of Chicago, Katherine holds the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master’s from Arizona State University and a Bachelor’s from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL). She is the violist of Quartet Sabaku, a string quartet on the Teaching Artists Roster of the Arizona Commission on the Arts.

Andrew O’Brien, piano, recently received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Solo Performance from Arizona State University, where he studied with Robert Hamilton. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University and earned his Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory, where he studied piano with Gabriel Chodos and chamber music with Benjamin Zander. Andrew is adjunct faculty in piano and music theory at Scottsdale Community College and maintains a teaching studio in Phoenix. He is staff pianist for Desert Foothills United Methodist Church.
