April 20, 2011 - PRLog -- The fight to find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) got some additional support recently, thanks to the work of residents in Lennar’s Colonial Heritage Community in Williamsburg, who helped raise just over $4,300, by organizing the first Colonial Heritage Walk MS benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Colonial Heritage’s Walk MS was open to all residents of this premier active adult community.  With several members of the Colonial Heritage neighborhood being affected either personally or through family connections by MS, an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, the walk gave residents the opportunity to come together and build a stronger sense of community.

By setting Colonial Heritage as an official Walk MS site, the resident participation tripled from last year, when some joined the Walk MS event in Hampton Roads, Va.  In all, approximately 60 community members helped with this year’s Walk MS, including 50 residents  took part in a half-mile, one-mile or two-mile walk while sporting  Colonial Heritage Team baseball caps donated by Lennar.  The walk was followed by an All American BBQ hosted by Lennar at the Welcome Home Center in celebration of the successful event.

“We had a number of residents interested in participating in the Walk MS last year, and we knew by bringing it to Colonial Heritage we could make an even bigger impact,” said Bob Tucci, a Colonial Heritage resident who helped organize the walk.  “We all know people who have been touched by this disease and felt it was a good cause to support.  My hope is that this can be the forerunner for more things like this in the future.”

All funds raised by Lennar’s Colonial Heritage Walk MS and raffle will be donated through the Hampton Roads Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and are designated for MS research.

“As a community for active adults, we are trying to make Colonial Heritage an official site for fundraising walks,” said Colonial Heritage Lifestyle Director Karen Ashby.  “We know these issues are important to the members of our community, and we are looking to begin similar fundraising walks for breast cancer and Alzheimer’s.
