Follow on Google News | Event Aims to Fight Childhood Obesity in Greater ClevelandA special fund-raising evening with the Cleveland area author of Don’t Call Me Cookie, a new book on childhood obesity, will take place 5:30 to 8 p.m. May 9 at the Shoreby Club in Bratenahl.
The evening will include healthy appetizers, low-calorie desserts, and most importantly, a special presentation on childhood obesity by a nationally recognized expert. The featured speaker is Leona Cuttler, M.D., the William T. Dahms Professor of Pediatrics and the Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, University Hospitals of Cleveland, Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. Dr. Cuttler said, “Don’t Call Me Cookie is a valuable tool for health professionals working with chil¬dren who are overweight or obese. It is also excellent for families who want to discuss nutrition, exercise and weight with their children. It is sensitive to the is¬sues of self-image facing preteens, and addresses them in a gentle, constructive manner while at the same time focusing on health issues.” Donating this valuable tool, a unique fiction book, to the children and families who need it most is at the heart of the Cookie fundraiser. With the help of Martha Rome, a Cleveland special event fundraising consultant, a Book Sponsorship Campaign was launched to raise funds to donate books directly to Cleveland area schools. To date, The Cookie Book Sponsorship Campaign has raised over $7,000 for the purchase of 600 copies of Don’t Call Me Cookie to be placed in Cleveland area schools. “I’m thrilled at the overwhelming support to donate copies of Cookie to Cleveland schools. In 2003 I began researching for this book, and now my dream to educate children and families to live a healthy lifestyle is finally happening. By putting Cookie into the hands and homes of children who need it most, we’re taking small steps to combat a very large and growing problem,” said Pasiadis. Cookie Book Sponsorship opportunities are still available at $100 for eight books, $250 for 20 books, $500 for 40 books, and $1000 for 80 books. Book Sponsorships are 100% tax-deductible. By purchasing Cookie in larger quantities, books can be purchased directly from the publisher at the low cost of $12.50 per book (including shipping and handling). Joseph-Beth Booksellers at The Cleveland Clinic sells the book ($21 per copy), and it is available online through retailers Amazon and Barnes and Noble ($16.10 and $16.15, respectively.) Proceeds from the evening will be used by Hawken School to promote healthy living. Tickets are $75 and $40 is tax deductible. Individual book donations are also being accepted to purchase books at the discounted price of $12.50. Checks for the evening and for purchasing individual books as well as Book Sponsorships may be made payable to Hawken School, Don’t Call Me Cookie, P.O. Box 8002, Gates Mills, Ohio 44040-8002. Endorsed by University Hospitals, Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital of Cleveland, Don’t Call Me Cookie will be one of the most important books your child ever reads. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, “Pasiadis concocted a light, breezy story that instructs while entertaining… “What a pleasure it was to read such an honest portrait of a tween realizing how food affects her in every area of her life. Vanessa Pasiadis does a wonderful job of creating a hybrid of education and entertainment that schools and other media outlets will benefit greatly from. 'Cookie' will open the reader's eyes and inspire change in their own life,” claims Elise Jaffe, Co-creator -Fooditude Media, LLC, Chicago, Illinois. “This book will serve as a benchmark for professionals working with children, and an essential guide for children and families who struggle with issues involving food and inactivity,” DON’T CALL ME COOKIE (ISBN: 978-1-60911- WHOLESALERS: About the Author: Vanessa M.
