"The YMCA is the oldest and most trusted name when it comes to swim classes," says Jenna Grossman, Triunfo YMCA program director. "Our method of instruction has taught literally millions of kids how to swim over the years throughout the country." Swim classes are conducted in eight sessions over two weeks and are available in private or group lessons.
Junior lifeguard training is for ages 12 to 14. "The goal is for students to recognize and prevent aquatic risks and help those in danger," says Grossman. "Junior lifeguards assist our experienced lifeguards. They'll get hands-on pool and deck experience as well as classroom time where they'll be taught the YMCA National Lifeguarding program."
Tryouts for YMCA swim teams are also underway. Swimmers must be able to swim 50 yards of freestyle, 25 yards of backstroke and 25 yards of breaststroke to qualify. Team members perfect stroke techniques, build endurance and compete in summer swim meets. "YMCA swim teams, especially from the east side of Ventura County, have excelled over the past few years," says Tarrik Daou, aquatics and healthy lifestyles director for the Miller Family YMCA of Newbury Park. "Our programs create great team spirit. Team members support and encourage each other to do their best."
