Follow on Google News | Marine Lake fun planned once again for 2011The annual free festival of fun and activities to celebrate Clevedon’s Marine Lake will this year be held on the weekend of September 23 to 25.
By: Kayleigh Sydenham The festival is run by non-profit making organisation MARLENS for the local community. Activities, stalls and sideshows are put on every year to raise money for the lake and entertain locals. MARLENS AGM this year will be on 10 May. The public are welcome and MARLENS is inviting those interested in finding out more about the festival plans to come along. The meeting will take place at 8pm at Clevedon Sailing Club on the sea front, where ideas from the community will be welcomed. Chairman of MARLENS Joe Norman said: “Every year this festival grows and grows and it’s down to the community who always make it a fantastic event. The AGM is an opportunity to share ideas about this year’s festival, to find out exactly what people want and wherever possible we will provide it. “If you are interested in what we are planning for the festival please come along and join in, there will be a bring and share supper and everyone is welcome! During the meeting we will also discuss the million-pound North Somerset Council lottery bid for Clevedon sea front improvements and get the latest progress report. “The Marine Lake opened in 1929 as a major leisure facility for Clevedon and is still in regular use. It requires constant upkeep and improvements to keep it in service for the people of Clevedon and North Somerset. A permanent repair to the outer wall of the marine lake is one of the top priorities for the lottery bid.” The annual festival sees schools, businesses, clubs and organisations coming together for the weekend. Stalls sell local produce and services and the stage showcases local young talent. Previous years have seen firework displays, ‘It’s a knockout’ tournaments, truck pulls, bouncy castles, vintage vehicle displays and dog agility shows. Have-a-go activities are always available on the lake itself including sailing, canoeing, radio-controlled model boat races, zorbing and novelty bath tub races. Plans for this year’s festival will be revealed over the upcoming weeks but if you would like to find out more please attend the AGM or visit the MARLENS website at www.marlens.org.uk End
