April 20, 2011 - PRLog -- Remedy Health News – According to an article from HealthDay News, there are certain diets that can help prevent cancer.  Daxaben Amin, a senior clinical dietitian in the clinical nutrition department at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, explains that all diets are not created equal when it comes to cancer prevention.  The diets that focus on the creation of long term healthy eating habits are most effective.  He cites the Mediterranean diet as a prime example of a diet that promotes long term nutrition.  This diet incorporates fruits, vegetables, uses herbs instead of salt for flavor, limits red meat and alcohol, uses oils instead of butter, and recommends the use of poultry and fish at least twice a week.  Amin points out another good diet for preventing disease called the whole-body type of diet.  This diet involves eating seven small meals a day in comparison to the traditional three large meals.  It incorporates a balance of fruit, vegetables, and whole grains, limits the use of high fat foods, and promotes lean protein and daily exercise.  Amin states that aspects of both the Mediterranean style diet and the whole-body diet can prevent cancer and heart disease.

There are, however, diets that do not work as well in terms of prevention.   Amin advises that unless one has celiac disease, they should avoid eating a gluten-free diet.  Gluten free is a diet without whole grain which deprives the body of vitamins and minerals that prevent cancer by supporting cell health.  Also, one should avoid a carbohydrate free diet.  Carbs are a main source of energy and come from foods that are known to prevent cancer.  Instead of going completely carb free, one should stay away from negative carbs and try to eat foods that have only good carbs.
