April 20, 2011 - PRLog -- BMI View: In spite of inflationary pressures, we maintain our optimistic outlook for the Indonesian food and drink market. Favourable demographics and a robust economic outlook mean it holds BRIC-like potential and investors clearly feel the same, with international and domestic players continuing to commit vast sums to the industry, both to expand and to develop capacity and market new products. Food price pressures will remain a short-term risk, eroding consumer ability to spend on non-essential food items, but medium and long term the outlook is undeniably bright.

* Headline Food Consumption is forecast to increase by 53.3% to 2015, with an increase of 7.8% forecast in 2011
 * Over the five-year forecast period, we expect Soft Drink Sales to increase by a huge 77.7% in value terms as premiumisation accelerates
 * Mass Grocery Retail Sales will increase by a very strong 67.5% to 2015, both as consumers trade up and increase per-trip spending and on the back of retailer expansion initiatives. Supermarkets will be the growth outperformers
 * Indonesia falls in eighth place out of 14 regional markets in our Asia Pacific Food & Drink Risk/Reward Ratings. The country outperforms the regional average in terms of Reward, but underperforms with regard Risk

Wal-Mart Entry Looking More Likely - US-based retailer Wal-Mart is reportedly in talks with Indonesian retailer Matahari Putra Prima on a possible partnership to develop Matahari's hypermarket chain in Indonesia, which could involve the former acquiring a significant stake in the latter. With Matahari scrapping the full sale of its Hypermart chain earlier in 2011, we have suggested that Wal- Mart, Casino Guichard-Perrachon and Lotte Shopping could be interested in the chance to acquire a majority stake. Indeed, having circled the Indonesian mass grocery retail industry for over a decade now, a partnership with Matahari may well represent a last chance for Wal-Mart to enter with immediate scale.

Not Just Wal-Mart... International Interest Remaining Strong - Targeting impressive growth forecasts, international giants Nestle and Coca-Cola Amatil have announced further Indonesian investments in recent months. Both are increasingly trying to reweight their exposure towards emerging markets in order to exploit the superior growth opportunities available and both are attempting to exploit a fledgling but significant premiumisation trend within the market.
