New Healthcare research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

April 20, 2011 - PRLog -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has retained pole position in BMI's Q211Business Environment Ratings for the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region. The country's Pharmaceutical Rating of 63.6 out of 100 is supported by solid scores across all individual variables, especially in the Industry and Country Risk categories. Factors such as the population's wealth and the increase in the incidence of lifestylerelated diseases in the Middle East are making pharmaceutical markets such as the UAE attractive investment propositions. Over the next 10 years, BMI forecasts that sales of prescription drugs and overthe- counter (OTC) medications will grow from US$1.59bn in 2010 to US$3.27bn in 2020, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.5%.

According to a report presented at the World Health Care Congress 2010 (WHCC), it is estimated that 32% of the Emirati, as well as the expatriate adult population (aged between 20 and 79 years) may contract diabetes, or pre-diabetes over the next decade if current trends continue. The estimated total cost of treating these patients is expected to reach AED31.27bn (US$8.5bn). The UAE's Type Two diabetes rate is among the top five countries in the world, with about 13% of the population aged between 20 and 79 years diabetic. This is more than double the global average, which currently stands at 6.4%.

A press release made by the Ministry of Health has revealed that a number of specialised hospitals will be built across the UAE over the next two years at a cost of nearly AED1bn (US$272mn). The largest of the hospitals will be the 200-bed, Saqr Hospital in Ras Al Khaimah, which will cost AED500mn (US$136mn) and is scheduled for completion in 2013. In addition, a specialised psychiatric hospital for patients in Dubai and the northern emirates will also be built. The 200-bed, Amal Hospital, will cost ADE600mn (US$163mn), and is currently in the design phase.

December 2010 saw the official opening of the Nucleotide Laboratory Complex at the Dubiotech science park. The state-of-the-art Nucleotide Laboratory Complex, which is the largest in the Middle East, comprises 256,000 square feet and is designed to house biotech, life sciences and pharmaceutical activities ranging from research and development to diagnostic, analytical and equipment training activities. So far, all four wings of the ground floor level have been fully booked, with the new companies finalising the installation of instruments in their respective laboratories. The new firms include Germanbased MAQUET Middle East, a global market leader of operating room systems and intensive care units, and Mubadala Healthcare's first phase of the National Reference Laboratory (NRL), an initiative created in partnership with and operated by Laboratory Corporation of America (LabCorp), which is one of the world's largest and most experienced clinical laboratory companies.
