Fibre Services assists in one of the biggest transport infrastructure projects in the UK

April 19, 2011 - PRLog -- Fibre successfully tendered for the asbestos contract and are delighted to be involved with the TT2 project. The New Tyne Crossing is a £260m project to design and build a second vehicle tunnel under the River Tyne, refurbish the existing vehicle tunnel and to operate and to maintain all the tunnels under the river until 2037. It is one of the biggest transport infrastructure projects currently active in Great Britain.

The existing Tyne tunnel was completed in 1967 and connects the town of Jarrow on the south bank of the river with North Shields and Howdon on the north bank. The original tunnel was one of two forming the original Tyne Tunnel Project; the others are the pedestrian and cyclist tunnels opened in 1951.

The vehicle tunnel is 1,676 meters or 5,500 ft (1.68 km) long. Fibre had the task of removing all the asbestos containing ceiling panels from the entire length of the tunnel whilst it was still operational.

Barry Softley, Managing Director of Fibre Services advises “Due to the sheer scale of this project it was important that we thoroughly assessed all of the logistical implications of carrying out the removal in a live tunnel. We utilised the traffic management systems and used innovative removal methods to maintain the tunnels transport services for members of the public.”

The project was completed by Fibre Services, 2 weeks prior to the expected completion date, which has ensured the least amount of disruption for this refurbishment project.
