Food Prices Are Rising – You Can Do Something About It!

The USDA recently predicted food costs rising as much as 4% in 2011 because of bad weather, higher fuel costs and ingredient costs. You can reduce your food costs by growing your own veggies in raised beds or in containers on your patio or balcony.

April 18, 2011 - PRLog -- Fruits and vegetables should make up the greater portion of your diet. They are low in calories, appealing to many people experiencing excess weight problems; and they are high in vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and fiber, which is even a better benefit.

Greens have very little carbohydrates in them, and the carbs that are there are packed in layers of fiber, which make them very slow to digest. That is why, in general, greens have very little impact on blood glucose. Eating a diet rich in fiber helps keep your digestive system healthy and can lower your risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

With home-grown vegetables taking a more prominent place on the table, they are gaining more respect in the gardening world. With increased interest from home gardeners, there has been a surge in the development of new varieties: colorful novelty vegetables, heirlooms, ethnic varieties and compact growers. Those who breed plants know that after taste, home gardeners want a high yield in a small space as well as it not being highly time consuming.

More important than a large space, you do need good soil, plenty of sunshine, and a water source. Not only will you be saving money over store-bought vegetables, but you will be eating a better quality of food and know that they were grown without toxic chemicals.

Now is a great time to start your veggie garden! For additional ideas, please go to http://www.howtogrowveggies.com
