CDV Investments: Blackberry’s RIM may attempt to outbid Google Inc for Nortel’s patents.

Research In Motion is considering topping Google Inc’s $900 mln bid for Nortel Networks Corp’s wireless technology patents.

April 18, 2011 - PRLog -- CDV Investments sources report that RIM may attempt to outbid Google Inc for Nortel’s wireless technology. Nortel Network which filed for bankruptcy protection in January 2009 was a pioneer in wired and wireless network technology and has assets including about 6,000 patents and patent applications for wireless, data and optical networking, voice internet, semiconductors and other technologies.

In early April, Google Inc, the world’s most popular search engine, made its intentions clear with a bid of $900 million for a suite of Nortel’s patents.

Google wants the patents to gain an edge in the growing wireless patent war against well-armed superpowers. In its drive to get its Android mobile phone software to the top of the wireless pile Google has attracted a number of law suits.

CDV Investments has been informed that even with robust interest in the Nortel patents a deal has been slow in coming as a result of drawn-out haggling between potential buyers and the firm’s liquidators.

Industry analyst say other potential buyers could possibly include Chinese telecom network firm ZTE, Ericsson, who earlier purchased the majority of Nortel’s wireless operations, and RPX which licenses patents for member clients for a fee.

RIM has so far chosen not to comment on the matter CDV Investments sources report.
