April 16, 2011 - PRLog -- More home owners are turning their own hand to tiling and using their creative ability to create and experiment with different designs and creations. Creating your own design style will ensure that your bathroom has a unique design all of its own and one that you can enjoy for many years to come.
Deciding on the material of tile you will choose is the first aspect of any tiling job and there are certainly many materials to choose from. Ceramic tiles are a real favourite and have been for years and they now come in a wide variety of styles, colours and designs. Porcelain tiles are equally popular and are a very durable, versatile tile that works extremely well in bathroom areas.
Travertine and slate are also options for the bathroom that are not normally the first choice of home owners but in fact both work extremely well in bathroom areas and will add real design and style. The slate tiles especially are non slip which makes them a popular choice and the variations in the shades of colour will fit in with any existing decor.
Glass tiles are now more popular than ever because they are fantastically durable and versatile. They work especially well in bathrooms as they are non porous and the variations in colour will really help open up and reflect light in small rooms.
Using combination tiles on the floor works really well with a uniformed background colour but be sure first to blend and coordinate floor colours with wall decor. Strong, dark colours on the floor will need light and neutral colours on the walls.
Neutral colours always work well in bathrooms, crèmes, whites and beiges are popular safe colours and are really good to use with bolder border colours. Many home owners like to keep the walls neutral and make a design of the bath area and shower area where smaller tiles and bolder colours can be used.
Reds and blacks will make a bold statement and for many this works really well with other neutral touches such as neutral blinds, countertops and bath areas. Blue and green are also popular colour and will add real earthy tones to your bathroom as well as creating a calm and peaceful atmosphere.
The first rule of any bathroom refurbishment is to decide on your wall and floor materials and then experiment with colours taking into consideration the extra touches such as shower tiles, bath surrounds and backsplash areas. Mosaic Tiles work really well and can be used as a central design pattern or alongside ceramic tiles on borders.
