Gallagher, MS, RN, CWOCN, CFCN, CHT, president of the WOCNCB. “Nevertheless, as more patients present with complications and co-morbidities, such as diabetes and obesity, patients and health care facilities need nurses whose skill and expertise has been validated by an accredited, internationally recognized credentialing organization. WOCNCB certification has become an imperative as a proven means to cost-effective care that leads to improved treatment outcomes and patient well-being.” Wound, ostomy and continence care certifications by the WOCNCB validate skills, abilities and expertise that go beyond general nursing care. Eligible nurses are required to be licensed as a Registered Nurse, have completed a bachelor’s degree or higher, and have met stringent education and clinical practice criteria. WOC nursing is one of the few specialties recognized by the American Nurses Association (ANA). Recognition by the ANA acknowledges consistency in standards of practice in 14 designated criteria areas.
