Everything, according to author James Hilgendorf.
In "The Buddha and the Dream of America", he writes:
"A new religion is needed for the next step forward for mankind, enabling the birth of a great new civilization waiting to be born.
"What is needed is a totally new identity, broad enough to embrace every single human being on the planet; an identity that connects every single human being to the cosmos and the entirety of the universe; yet still sings the praises of the solitary self, allowing and encouraging unlimited individual development."
Buddhism can provide such an identity, he claims, and America is the place where this new civilization will issue forth.
Another of Hilgendorf's books, "Life & Death: A Buddhist Perspective"
Hilgendorf writes that an awakening to Eternity, and to the eternity of our lives - a basic tenet of Buddhism - is essential to the building of a new civilization. He says:
"The real Dream of America is slumbering, is asleep, has yet to come. It has nothing to do with opportunity, with economics, with slogans. It has everything to do with waking to who we really are.
"Death is at the heart of our awakening."
And again:
"It is the connecting heart that must emerge before the birth of the new civilization. It is the eye that can actually see that has to open. It is Eternity that has to unfold before our very eyes.
