LEDs themselves are generally cool to the touch and produce very little exterior heat. However, the internal electronic dies that power and control LEDs produce significant amounts of heat. Unless the die inside an LED is adequately cooled, the result can be a decrease in both the light output and the LED’s working life. In effect, excess heat at the LED die can erase the gains in efficiency, length of life or total cost of ownership from older lighting systems.
To remove excess heat from LED dies, Advanced Thermals Solution, ATS, provides maxiFLOW™ heat sinks specially designed for typical LED applications, including displays and room lighting. The maxiFLOW™ heat sinks are perform in ambient (room temperature)
An example is the ATS 58000 LED heat sink, which is 45 mm wide x 26 mm high x 330 mm long. The aluminum heat sink has a flat base, linear cooling fins and a black anodized finish that provide both form and function. Among other places, it is used for cooling LEDs in office area ceiling lights where the airflow is quite low, often less than 200 LFM. In these conditions the thermal resistance of the 58000 heat sink of just 1.2 degrees C per watt. This means significant levels of heat flow into the 58000 heat sink, and the LED dies are kept within their ideal operating temperature range.
Other ATS maxiFLOW™ heat sinks are used for cooling hot components such as BGAs on PC boards in thousands of applications. Like the LED heat sinks, they remove excess heat in low airflow conditions, without the need for fans and blowers.
