‘Miracle’ tree puts cleaner drinking water in reach of millions

The biodiesel made from Moringa is already known to have superior oxidative stability than biodiesel made with almost any other feed stocks, now research indicates it is a powerful and inexpensive water purifier too.

April 15, 2011 - PRLog -- Seedcake from the crushed seeds of the renowned Moringa tree could revolutionise water purification in the third world.

Moringa Oleifera trees – already used for centuries by the people of its native India and Africa as a valued food source and powerful resource for healing medicine – have received increasing publicity over the last two years for their environmental value as a true environmentally efficient tree.

In a world facing climate change, rising population and growing desertification, the Moringa tree is unique in that it is fast-growing, drought-tolerant and extremely nutritious. It has edible seedpods, flowers and leaves, all with the advantage of containing numerous medicinal properties.

Now research shows that the tree’s seeds could provide a low-cost means of water purification that could drastically reduce water-borne diseases in the developing world. Research indicates that Moringa-based water treatment techniques can produce a 90 to 99.99 per cent reduction in bacteria in previously untreated water, at virtually no cost – a huge feat in the fight against reducing the estimated two million people who die from water-borne diseases every year, most of them children under the age of five.

High achieving Moringa has also proven itself to be a leader in the bio-fuel industry – where the need for alternative fuel sources as our traditional fossil fuel stocks dwindle, has pushed the search for cleaner, greener and renewable fuel sources towards environmentally sustainable crops like Moringa.

James McCarthy, of Anstiss Investment Groups S.L., said that over the last year investments in Moringa have steadily increased. “There has been a definite shift in the attitude of investors, as many are leaning towards green and ethical investments. Most projects in the alternative investment arena are now gearing towards being environmentally sound and ethical, whether through the use of greener materials, carbon emission offsetting or through programmes which will benefit local people. Moringa is a perfect example of an environmentally sound investment.”

As production of bio-diesel is set to rise, there is a clear opportunity for the waste product of its manufacture to be truly recycled, and in the best possible way - by creating cleaner drinker water for the third world.
