Bradford born artist David Hockney is probably best known for his ‘joiners’, large images created through a collage of Polaroid photographs. In recent years Hockney has applied a similar technique to his paintings, producing works such ‘Bigger Trees Near Warter’, a 15’ x 40’ landscape made up of 50 individual canvases. Hockney donated the work to The Tate Gallery in 2008. However, from October 1st 2011 the painting is to be exhibited at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery in Bradford – the first time it has been exhibited anywhere in the UK outside of London.

Being a local lad, there’s rarely a time when visitors to Pennine Yorkshire can’t find Hockney’s work on display. Bradford Gallery is currently hosting an exhibition of Hockney’s 1969 etchings produced to illustrate ‘Six Fairy Tales’ from the Brother’s Grimm. The 39 etchings went against the convention of illustrating the most dramatic scenes of a story. Instead Hockney decided he wanted to focus on details of the characters that he found interesting and he unashamedly drew on the styles of medieval artists such as Da Vinci and Uccello to capture them.

Visitors to the region can also enjoy the permanent displays of Hockney’s work at the 1853 Gallery at Salt’s Mill in Saltaire, near Bradford, throughout the year.

David Hockney is just one of the many cultural icons to emerge from Pennine Yorkshire. From the Bronte sisters of Haworth to poet laureate Ted Hughes from Mytholmroyd, the region continues to draw visitors form around the world in search of history and inspiration in equal measures.
