COWBOY AND INDIAN TO TOUR WESTERN U.S. BEGINNING LATE APRIL

“Soul and folk… is there a name for that? Oh right, ‘awesomeness.’” – The Traak

AUSTIN, Texas (Apr. 14, 2011) — West Coast audiences are going to have a chance to sample the sounds of one of Austin’s hottest new acts when Cowboy and Indian head out on a western swing  this April and May. The tour kicks off in Tucson, AZ at Club Congress on April 27.

The rootsy trio, which has earned comparisons with the legendary Carter Family, began when Jazz Mills (T-Bird and the Breaks) got together with Jesse Plemons to write their first song. The collaboration took off and before long the pair was drawing major buzz at SXSW. Daniel James (frontman of SF based Leopold and His Fiction) soon joined the band to complete the trio. “We came together out of nowhere and were immediately inspired by one another,” Mills said.

And they didn’t waste a moment. The first song they recorded, “Ledbellies,” was written over the phone, since Daniel was in San Francisco and Jazz and Jesse were in Austin. But as soon as the two arrived in San Francisco, says James, “We tracked the song from the ground up in living rooms, bedrooms and closets.” Cowboy and Indian continue to grow and evolve; they are now touring with a full band. Stephanie Hunt (vocals), Peder Gilham (bass and vocals), and Dorian Colbert (drums) have all joined the trio.

The band is currently working on their first full-length album, produced by James and due out this spring. They recently recorded their video for “Ledbellies” (featured on taste-maker blog Baybridged.com) while on their cross-country tour, using playful footage captured in Chicago and on the banks of Lake Michigan. The band’s song “Trouble Tracks” was recently featured in an episode of the NBC hit series Parenthood.

“Though only formed less than a year ago, Mills and Plemons are a natural complement to one another, and we are excited to see what the trio produces when they release their debut recording later in 2011.” – Austin Sound
