April 14, 2011 - PRLog -- Hawkshead Brewery will be marking the annual Damson Day celebration in the Lyth Valley with two unique stouts brewed using damsons harvested in the valley.

The team at Hawkshead Brewery, based in Staveley, have produced a damson stout and a damson & vanilla stout in a bid to support the revival of Lyth Valley Damson.

Each year, Damsons thrive on the orchards of the Lyth and Winster Valleys and the day celebrates the coming of the blossom. “The people of the Lake District wish to protect and preserve these orchards by growing, picking and supporting the use of Westmorland damsons.” said Alex Brodie, MD Hawkshead Brewery.

“The North has become the home of this particular fruit and we wish to support this tradition for many years to come” he added.

The ales will be available from a large outside bar which will be laid out especially for the event on April, 16 from 12 noon to 5pm. In addition to the damson stouts, the brewery will be serving their CAMRA North West Champion Bitter and Windermere Pale which recently won a silver award in The International Brewing Awards. Visitors will also be able to taste the newly launched Lakeland Lager which is Hawkshead’s first keg beer.

Hawkshead Brewery which is seen as a showcase for real ale, recently opened its new Beer Hall, part of a £250,000 expansion project.

The Beer Hall boasts viewing galleries throughout enabling visitors to look into the brew house, the cellar, the temperature controlled specialist beer shop and the new fermentation room.
