Dental Practice in Madison WI Says: EAT FOR YOUR TEETH

What you eat matters -- not just for your waistline, but also for healthy teeth.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Apr. 14, 2011 - It was a dark and stormy night -- -I was standing in front of the fridge looking for a snack when the Tooth Fairy appeared on the milk carton.  She said, “You do not want any more missing teeth do you?  So choose wise and healthy.”  She disappeared without any suggestions!!

There are certain foods that are good for your teeth and some that are bad.

The good stuff - the old standbys are always good choices:  fiber rich fruits and veggies:

Celery--since you have to chew it a lot, it produces additional saliva which kills the bad bacteria in your mouth. Plus the extra water in celery helps clean your teeth.

Onions--you may not smell good but your teeth will love it. It destroys the bacteria which would like to eat your teeth!

Shitake mushrooms--not on your daily diet but they work like onions and also prevent plaque.

Cheese--helps produce additional saliva which destroys bacteria and can work to prevent discoloration of your teeth.

Strawberries--are a natural way to whiten your teeth!! Who knew?? So brush your teeth with strawberries!

Oranges--like strawberries help to whiten teeth..after brushing just rub a bit of the orange rind skin on your teeth.

Milk--it is all about calcium and vitamin D that keeps teeth strong.

Meat, fish, and eggs--for their phosphorus which is needed for tooth enamel formation.

Bananas--plus some whole grain foods and spinach are good sources of magnesium which is also needed for enamel.

Carrots---a great source of beta-carotene, which turns to Vitamin A in the body for strong teeth and bones.

Things to avoid or use in moderation are sticky and sugary food or drink:

1. Sugary candies and sweets that linger in your mouth a long time!!  BUT that piece of chocolate leaves your mouth in a hurry, so it is less harmful than sticky raisins!!

2.  Bacteria are on a high carb diet and love any lingering starches like potato and bread bits stuck in your teeth.

3.   Any sports and/or carbonated drinks that are loaded with sugar, phosphoric and  citric acid just eats your tooth enamel and causes decay. So if you love your teeth, start eating for them!!
