A recent announcement by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reveals that there was a nine per cent increase in cosmetic procedures during 2010.
The US cosmetic surgery industry was impacted by the economic downturn, with many people perhaps putting off surgery as they were forced to tighten their belts financially.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has ascribed the upswing in growth to a public return to confidence as the economy recovers from the recession.
According to the recent US figures, breast enlargement remains the top cosmetic surgery procedure. In the US in 2010 over 318,000 breast enlargement procedures were performed. Among other high ranking procedures were liposuction, blepharoplasty, and breast reduction.
The Aesthetic Society President, Felmont Eaves III stated: "Patients who put off surgery because of uncertainty in the economy and the job market are coming back for tried and true procedures. Growth in demand will likely continue as the recession eases and baby boomers and their offspring begin to explore surgical and nonsurgical options."
In the UK the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reported that the number of surgical procedures in 2010 showed an increase of five per cent from the previous year. Similarly to the US the most in-demand procedures were breast enlargement, eyelid surgery, and breast reduction.
