Sometimes as we age, staying in our own becomes difficult.  Finding the right solution can be a confusing process.  There are many options available, so make sure that you understand the distinction between a retirement home and a nursing home.
Retirement homes are privately owned rental accommodations for people needing minimal to moderate assistance with activities of daily living.  Caroline Place, located at 118 Market Street in Hamilton provides a good example of a retirement home.  In a nursing home, also referred to as a Long Term Care Facility, residents have higher care needs.  There is 24 hour care available to help with necessities like bathing, eating and medical needs.

Nursing homes are licensed, regulated and funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.  Rates are subsidized by the government for those who qualify.  For "standard or basic" accommodation the rate is $1543.95 per month, $1787.29 for semi-private accommodation and $2091.45 per month for private accommodation.
People residing in a retirement residence are protected by the Landlord Tenant Act.  Residents in a retirement home are able to manage and pay for their own care.  Retirement home rates are set by the operator and can be as high as $5000 a month.  At Caroline Place all room are private and start at $2595 a month.  The amenities and services offered by retirement homes vary considerably.  At Caroline Place we offer considerable flexibility. For example, you can choose to opt in or out of meal plans and/or other services. You may also leave for extended periods of time -- such as for a vacation -- and retain your residence.

Nursing home services are inclusive of care, meals, laundry and housekeeping. The types and levels of homemaking help, personal care, and health services offered by retirement homes vary significantly, as do their costs. At Caroline Place, the rate includes meals, housekeeping, laundry, physiotherapy and recreational programs.  Additional services can be purchased.

Application to a nursing home is made through Community Care Access Centre (CCAC).  This agency qualifies individuals and arranges for placement.  Often, there are wait periods, especially for private rooms.  Application to a retirement residence is made directly to the home of choice.  Caroline Place is Hamilton’s newest retirement residence, is now accepting residents.  Simply call (905) 548-7660 for more information.  Our expert staff would be happy to provide direction to help you through your maze of options
